Problem

+250 million children will not reach their cognitive milestones by the age of five, falling permanently behind before entering a classroom. By the end of primary school, 53% of children in low and middle-income countries will not be able to read and understand a simple story. A lack of access to high-quality textbooks and supplementary reading materials in local languages, coupled with inadequate teaching approaches, are key elements behind this global learning crisis. COVID-19 will only exacerbate this problem.

Solution

BookSmart supports the distance learning and reading needs of students with full-color, culturally relevant and curriculum aligned books, available in multiple languages, with an embedded children’s English Dictionary. BookSmart provides a dashboard containing key data insights, like indicators of time spent reading and reading engagement, that can be used to enhance learning outcomes. The digital library can be curated to support instruction in a variety of settings, from classrooms to homes.

Target Beneficiaries

BookSmart digital learning solution supports school readiness, foundational literacy, numeracy, vocabulary and socio-emotional development of children, ages 3-6, who spend time reading at home with their parents and caregivers, especially now during COVID-19 lockdown. For school P1-P6 age students, BookSmart further enhances their reading fluency and comprehension in order to improve learning outcomes. Key geographies include East Africa, West Africa, MENA, South Asia and Latin America.

Mission and Vision

Readers build a better world. Worldreader works globally with partners to support vulnerable and underserved communities with digital reading solutions that help improve learning outcomes, workforce readiness, and gender equity. Digital reading has the power to reach millions and support the global community in accelerating progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Competitive Advantage

Ten years from launching one of the first digital-reading services in the Global South, Worldreader’s BookSmart (for Home and School) digital reading solution, built on human-centered design principles, offers a scalable cost-effective solution to address the growing learning poverty crisis of children. Digital reading is a highly cost-savings alternative to the traditional supply chain of physical books; also offering real-time reading data for education leaders and practitioners. BookSmart locally and culturally-relevant library increases the reading of children and families, as research shows people engage best with books that reflect their lives and identities. BookSmart’s low-cost and flexible subscription-based model makes the solution highly competitive at scale. BookSmart generates evidence on reading behaviours and provides data insights (even while children read offline) that help teachers, school leaders, and parents track reading progress and improve learning outcomes.

Planned Goals and Milestones

Upcoming features will include individual tracking and learning plans for teacher and parental engagement, along with new language collections, enhanced data-analysis and accessibility features, such as text to speech. With a partnership first approach, BookSmart envisions reaching several hundred thousand children with rapid expansion across current geographies and in fragile, conflict and crisis settings. BookSmart estimates raising $3 million in service’ fees over the next three years.
